The Digital Rights Alliance Africa (DRAA) is a coalition of civil society organisations advancing and defending digital rights across the continent.
DRAA brings together African organisations working at the front line of digital rights — freedom of expression, privacy and data protection, digital access and inclusion, online safety, and accountability. Formed to turn shared concern into shared action, the Alliance is where members pool evidence, coordinate advocacy, and stand together when digital rights are under threat.
We track the state of digital rights where our members work — shutdowns, surveillance, restrictive law, and gaps in protection — and turn it into research and analysis others can use.
We coordinate positions and speak with a common voice to governments, regulators, platforms and regional bodies.
When digital rights come under attack, members support one another with rapid, coordinated action.
We connect organisations across borders, so a lesson learned in one country strengthens the whole Alliance.
DRAA is member-driven. Its day-to-day coordination — the Secretariat — is hosted by CIPESA (the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa), and the Alliance’s work is supported by the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL).
The Alliance spans 15 countries — Burundi, Cameroon, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe — 30 organisations and 57 members.
